“One must always maintain one’s connection to the past, and yet ceaselessly pull away from it. To remain in touch with the past requires a constant imaginative effort.”—Bachelard, French philosopher/poet

When I start to create a sculpture, holding a found object or an especially beautiful piece of wood, I am driven by a desire to forge connections. I believe that all of life is connected; the mystery is how.  The essence of connectedness inspires my work, as I juxtapose seemingly different concepts—abstract forms with the classical human form, the present with the past.

For years I have shamelessly raided flea markets, antique stores, meadows and city streets looking for objects that intrigue me. I have also found or created human forms—ears, faces, limbs--and cast them in bronze. Many of the found objects were made to last, but discarded when styles and inventions changed.

To me they remain important reminders of our history, evoking emotion and memory. They inspire me to create a three-dimensional poem of contrasts, metaphors that evoke that mysterious place somewhere between the physical and the subconscious worlds.

I regard my sculptures as a form of storytelling.  Every piece has meaning to me.  I hope that each one inspires a story in the imagination of the person who looks at it, because I consider the viewer an essential participant in the storytelling mystery.  This collaboration, between artist and viewer, is the ultimate and most rewarding connection of all.
